
NANCY BURD
PRESIDENT
For more than two decades, Nancy Burd has been a leader, practitioner and advisor in the nonprofit and philanthropic communities. She is the founder of The Burd Group, a national consulting firm advising individual donors and grantmakers on strategic and effective philanthropy, capacity- building initiatives, grantmaking strategy and lending. For nonprofit agencies the firm advises on strategy, financial management and operations, guiding organizations through growth and change.
Prior to founding The Burd Group, Burd was Vice President for Grantmaking at The Philadelphia Foundation where she led the transformation of grantmaking creating innovations in strategy with the goal of building high performing nonprofits. This model was replicated in foundations across the nation. This work resulted in one of her many publications entitled, On the Money: A Review of Key Financial Challenges Facing Nonprofits Today – and How Grantmakers Can Help, published by Grantmakers for Effective Organizations.
Earlier in her career, Burd was the first director of the Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF), a national CDFI, in Philadelphia and New Jersey, investing loans and grants in nonprofit organizations for facilities growth and business development. She became Senior Vice President overseeing the growth of NFF’s regional offices nationwide. She established NFF as one of the first State certified Community Development Financial Institutions in Pennsylvania and established the City of Philadelphia's Childcare Facilities Fund.
Burd has taught nonprofit and foundation management in the graduate programs, Fels School of Government and the School of Social Policy and Practice at University of Pennsylvania.
